But the real question isn’t whether AI improved your service. It’s whether your AI professional indemnity insurance still recognises what you deliver as professional work.

Because the moment your output is shaped by a model rather than solely by human judgement, you’ve crossed a line your insurer may not have agreed to cover. And most founders don’t find out until a claim.

The Line Your Policy Was Built On

PI cover is predicated on one thing: the insured exercising professional skill, care, and judgement. That’s not a technicality buried in the small print. It’s the foundation the entire policy was calculated on. Your premium, your terms, your coverage triggers all flow from it.

When AI generates or substantially shapes a deliverable, the nature of the work product changes. The human review layer doesn’t automatically restore the professional judgement basis if the substance came from a model.

Underwriters are already asking “what percentage of your deliverables involve AI assisted output?” at renewal. The ones who aren’t asking yet will be within twelve months. The direction of travel is unmistakable.

What the Claims Team Will Ask You

If a PI claim involves AI-assisted work, three questions will determine whether your cover responds. Knowing them now lets you work backwards and prepare.

“Was the AI tool disclosed at placement?”

If you didn’t tell your insurer that AI contributes to your professional outputs, they’ll explore whether this constitutes a material change to the risk. That takes you straight back to the fair presentation duty under the Insurance Act 2015, and the remedies available to an insurer who can show they would have underwritten differently.

“What was the human’s role in the output?”

This is where claims live or die. A reviewer who rubber stamped AI generated work without substantive professional input weakens the coverage position. A reviewer who genuinely applied expertise, interrogated the output, and modified it using professional judgement strengthens it. The difference between those two things isn’t subtle. And insurers know how to test for it.

“Could a qualified professional, without AI, have reached the same conclusion?”

If yes, the AI was a tool assisting professional work and the claim has a defensible coverage position. If the AI produced something no human in your firm could have produced independently, the insurer will argue the output falls outside the scope of professional services as underwritten. That’s the argument that voids coverage.

These aren’t theoretical questions. They’re the framework a claims handler will apply. You can answer them about your own business right now. If any of the answers make you uncomfortable, your broker needs to know before your next renewal.

Your Deliverables Changed. Your Cover Should Too.

The shift from “human first” or “human only” to AI-assisted professional services isn’t a problem. It’s progress. But not linear. A PI policy doesn’t reflect this progress, that’s material change and that’s uninsured. The founders who align their AI professional indemnity cover to their actual delivery model are the ones who can scale with confidence, not the ones who find out at claims stage that their policy was built for a different business.
